What does NIOS Transfer of Credit mean?
Transfer of Credit (TOC) is an official NIOS facility that may let an eligible learner bring credit for certain previously passed subjects into an NIOS course. It is not automatic and it is not a way to move every prior mark into a new certificate.
The official decision can depend on the learner's previous board, the subject actually passed, the timing of that result, the NIOS subject scheme and the evidence submitted for verification.
When should you check TOC?
Check it before you finalise subjects, submit an admission or re-admission form, or make a payment. Official TOC material stresses the timing of the option; leaving it until after an application can create avoidable uncertainty.
TOC may be relevant if you passed one or more subjects but did not complete the whole course, are returning after an earlier attempt, or need to confirm how an existing subject fits the NIOS scheme. It is not a substitute for checking the exact requirement of your next university, course or examination.
Four checks before you request TOC
- Confirm the source qualification: record your previous board, course, marksheet and the exact subject names and codes.
- Check subject equivalence: an apparently similar subject can differ in theory, practical work, code or syllabus. Use the official NIOS scheme, not a guess.
- Check timing and limits: official rules can set conditions around the age of a result, eligible boards and the number of credits. Verify the latest version before applying.
- Protect original records: keep original marksheets secure, upload only through the official process or an authorised, documented workflow, and retain proof of submission.
TOC, re-admission and additional subjects are not the same
Learners often use these terms together, but they can lead to different routes and outcomes. A TOC review concerns prior subject credit. Re-admission concerns an earlier NIOS learner record. An additional-subject or On-Demand plan has its own admission and examination conditions. Ask the official body or a documented support channel to confirm which option applies to your exact history.

Can every passed subject be transferred to NIOS?
